The site of the BWS pond/dyke site behind Fabers’ Road Extension is not far from the troubled hotspot of Jane Usher Boulevard and is known for hiding stashes of firearms, ammunition and drugs, and one or two dead bodies. Yet another was discovered around3:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. We were there and spoke to Senior Superintendent and Precinct 2 Commander Alford Grinage for details as they were then known.
“About half an hour ago we received a call that there was a body in the creek. Upon arrival we observed the lifeless body of a male floating in the dike. At this time we are waiting on the doctor to do a post mortem. [It is a ] partially decomposed body. The distance that the body is in the dike right now, but I observed signs of blood on the side of the creek, so we suspect foul play. [It was a] partally nude body . [It] looks like a young person.”
The dead man was seen floating face down in the lagoon about 6 feet from dry land apparently dead. Also seen on the body was a cut wound to the neck measuring about 6 inches in length and (1) large cut wound to the abdomen, from the collar bone down to the bottom of the stomach. The body was retrieved from the lagoon but due to the advance state of decomposition it was unrecognizable. A postmortem examination was conducted at the scene by Dr. Mario Estradabran; however, the cause of death had not been ascertained as yet and is pending further analysis. The body has been identified as 29-year-old Davee Dwayne Copius of Jane Usher Boulevard. His niece, Latifah Sutherland, told us how they made the identification.
“My granny send me wah text last night about after eleven, saying that its my uncle, because of the stuff they she they find pan ah and the tattoo . According to she she nevah see ah from Monday, If he stay out fu one night, he naw stay out fu two nights, he a come home, and during the day he’ll come Tuesday. We coulda figure something wrong with it but we nevah know this mia be the outcome, they had to bury ah. The police came to my granny house and ask for a social id and that’s how they ID the body. “
Police say they have no leads in their investigation, particularly as to why Davee Copius was killed so gruesomely.
“There is no lead in this latest homicide. There is no lead whatsoever and we are asking the assistance of the public. Anyone with information can contact us.So far we have nothing to indicate the reason why anyone would want to kill this individual. We are still in the process of recording statements and interviewing people and hopefully we can come up with a motive. So far there is nothing telling us why this person was killed.”
It is equally as baffling for Copius’ family members.
[Paraphrased] “That’s the question everybody asks her. He’s a person who didn’t have a problem with anybody. He could go anywhere in Belize. He’s a friendly person. He’d go anywhere for anybody. He goes to Queen Square and he hangs there with this young lady, who’s son he took as his own. from there he’d go home. We don’t know where all of this took place. This is something we never expected to happen”
Police say they collected little evidence from the area but they are going over what they do have from the land surrounding the site.
