However, he was given a reprieve today as Justice Courtney Abel granted a stay of execution so that the decision can be appealed to the Court of Appeal. We hear more from Bruce’s attorney Audrey Matura-Shepherd.
“We had applied for a stay of execution on the order of the magistrate in the case of Deon Bruce and we were able to get that application heard today by Justice Abel. The prosecution, in this case, the office of the Solicitor General or the Attorney General will not object to the application we need. Basically that application means is that what they are saying that while we are taking the matter now to the Supreme Court on Deon’s behalf, that we are asking that there be a stay, so that the order of the magistrate and the decision unto the extradition be stayed until there is the appeal. Otherwise, Bruce is going for an academic exercise at the Court of Appeal”.
The case has been formally appealed and is expected to come up in due course.
