Deputy Director General of Technical Cooperation of the International Atomic Energy Agency Visits Belize
The Deputy Director General of Technical Cooperation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mr. Dazhu Yang, and the Section Head of Technical Cooperation for Latin America and the Caribbean, Mr. Saul Perez Pijuan, arrived in Belize for a working visit on Sunday, August 5th. The aim of the visit was to strengthen technical cooperation with Belize as well enhance regional cooperation for Belize through its partnership with IAEA. The IAEA is an international organization that seeks to accelerate and enlarge the contribution of atomic energy to peace, health, and prosperity throughout the world and to inhibit its use for any military purpose, including nuclear weapons. Belize has received support for the establishment of the veterinary diagnostic laboratory at the Belize Animal Health Authority (BAHA), detection and control of the fruit fly affecting agriculture, national food safety capabilities, environmental monitoring, establishment of its radiation safety infrastructure, and cancer control through training, equipment and expert advice since joining the IAEA in 2006. During the visit to Belize, Mr. Yang and Mr. Pijuan held several bilateral meetings to discuss ongoing projects and other possible areas of cooperation to maximize the use of nuclear technology for further development. Those meetings were held with several high-level Government officials, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Wilfred Elrington, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and other stakeholders including the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, the University of Belize and BAHA. Mr. Yang and Mr. Pijuan departed Belize on, Tuesday, August 7th.
