A domestic dispute in the south leaves one man dead and the accused – his daughter’s boyfriend, on the run. But what would cause the 23 year old to want to hurt someone so close to the woman he loves? Our Dangriga correspondent Harry Arzu went searching for answers.

A domestic dispute between two lovers led to the senseless death of a resident of Maya King also known as South Stann Creek which occurred over the weekend and Independence police are on a massive manhunt for the accused. The victim has been identified as 56 year old Isaac Gutierrez, a Guatemalan National who was a labourer of the said locality. Initial Police investigation revealed that the step daughter of the decease and her boyfriend 26 year old Jose Soto, a Honduranian National of Maya King Area, were having regular disputes and in the interest of this step daughter he had gotten involved by providing her with advice. Moreover, Soto’s girlfriend, indicated t him that because of the regular quarrels, they had been having, she had preferred to break off the relationship. So on Sunday July 22nd at about 6:30pm, Soto visited the home of Gutierrez who reportedly was resting, seeking the whereabouts of his girlfriend. Conversely, because he (Soto) did not get a favorable response, in his rage he allegedly inflicted a single cut wound to Gutierrez’s throat with a machete. Gutierrez was subsequently rushed to the Southern Regional Hospital where he was receiving treatment, but succumbed to his injuries on Monday July 23rd at about 12:20am. Police reported that a 14 years old minor was the only other person at home at the time of the incident, who witnessed the vicious attack. Jose Soto has since been a fugitive and is considered to be armed and dangerous. Police are seeking the public assistance in the apprehension of Soto.
