On Friday of last week, a garbage collector lost his life when he was knocked down by the garbage truck he was working on. The accident happened in the Lake Independence area of Belize City sometime around 2:30 in the afternoon. The victim, Kenrick Sutherland was on his first day of work with the Belize Waste Control as a temporary employee when the accident happened. According to reports, Sutherland jumped onto the back of the moving truck and as unable to steady himself on the truck and fell to the ground. The truck then ran over Sutherland and he died shortly after. The driver of the truck, Luis Beltran Garcia, a Honduran National, has since been charged with manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, driving a motor vehicle with due care and attention and permitting a person to travel not properly seated. Garcia was arraigned in court yesterday morning where the prosecutor protested to bail saying that Garcia, not being able to prove his immigration status, was a flight risk. The magistrate denied bail and Garcia was remanded to prison until March 29.
