Elena Smith is new Unions Senator, but for how long?

Educator and long-standing union activist Elena Smith was this morning sworn in as the twelfth member of the Senate, representing the vlcsnap-2016-01-28-13h09m38s578trade unions and civil society. Here was the moment she took the oath at the start of today’s meeting in Belmopan. Smith’s appointment eases, but does not end a stand-off between the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) and the Civil Society Steering Committee. That’s because, as she told us when we asked her about her appointment and plans following the meeting, her appointment is only meant to be for a short period of time.
