There was a fatal traffic accident in the Corozal District on Monday September 29. It happened in the vicinity of the Free-Zone Gate, where a blue Ford Ranger pick-up truck was seen in the middle of the road extensively damaged. About 30 feet away from the vehicle was the body of 37-year-old Jose Benigno Lopez, a Mexican watchman of Sub-Teniente-Lopez Quintana Roo.
Initial investigation revealed that about 4:00 p.m., the vehicle driven at the time by Jose Lopez and a passenger, 50-year-old Tilo Diaz Lopez, a Mexican farmer, exited the free zone at a high speed where he suddenly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn several times.
Investigation also revealed that both men were flung out of the vehicle, where Jose Lopez apparently suffered a blow to the head. The body of Jose Lopez was taken to the Corozal Town Hospital where it was pronounced dead on arrival. The body now awaits a postmortem examination.
Tilo Lopez was treated for minor bruises to the body and a small cut wound to the head, and was later released.
Police investigations continue.
