San Ignacio Police are tonight trying to positively identify the body of a Salvadoran man who was knocked down and killed Monday night. A resident of Mosquito Ville Area, reported to police that just before 8pm, he was driving on the corner of Cahal Pech and Buena Vista street, on his way to pick up his father-in-law. After passing Chuc’s Gas Station, situated on the Benque Viejo Road, a vehicle coming in his direction, shined its high beam directly at him, impairing his vision. According to his report, when he was finally able to see again, he saw someone on a bicycle coming directly at him. The driver says that he tried to swerve out of the way, but it was too late and collided with the person, drove on top of him and started dragging him for some distance. That man has since been identified by a friend as Sergio. We spoke with her on Tuesday.
Friend of Sergio
Since Sergio has no family in Belize, his friends say they are making funeral arrangements for him.
Female Friend of the Deceased
“I felt frightened by the accident which became of my immediate interest because my husband works as a watchman at Sergio Chuc’s Gas Station. That’s why I got to know that he was knocked down. We have thought to come to assist the deceased because he appears to have no family close to here, so, we want to favour him on that. So, we are taking the pictures of his body, we will take him to the Church of Esquipulas. We will offer to conduct a wake for him there, then we will do the post mortem ceremonial mass and we will find a way to bury him…because we feel sorry for this man because he does not have any relatives around here, and that is why we are doing him that favour”.
