Father of three murdered in Belmopan

A father of three was murdered last night in the City of Belmopan. The shooting incident took place shortly before 10pm on Costa Rica Street which is located in the San Martin Extension area. We advise that the video footage used in the following story is graphic and would recommend our viewers to view with caution. Plus TV’s Jesse Mendoza visited the home of the deceased this morning and filed the following report.

vlcsnap-2013-05-17-21h24m25s255The image you are looking at is that of 30 year old Richard Russell Sr. He’s the father of three children, a 9 year old, 7 year old, and a 3 year old. Richard Sr. was at home along with his wife and children when shortly before 10pm last night someone came calling for him. Plus news spoke with sister of the deceased, Andrea Russell who relayed to us what she knows.

Andrea Russell – Sister of the deceased:
About 9:45, my brother came home and he got inside. When he got inside, he took off his clothes, he was in his boxers and taking out his breakfast, when someone hollered for him. They came to the front window and he told them go to the side window and he told my sister-in-law “See da who di hail mi,” but my sister-in-law was already laying down, so she told him “You go see da who, da you dey di hail.” He said okay and when he went to open the window, as he opened the window, they shot him.

Jesse Mendoza – PlusNews:
Where did he get shot?

Andrea Russell – Sister of the deceased:
I think it was in his mouth. He blocked his face with his hand and it burst through his hand, went in his mouth and burst through his head back.

vlcsnap-2013-05-17-21h25m57s122When we arrived at the home this morning, Andrea was washing her brother’s blood from inside the house; but as you can see from the recording, Richard evidently lost a substantial amount of blood. Andrea told us what her brother did after having been shot.

Andrea Russell – Sister of the deceased:
When he got shot, he was walking up and down. He wasn’t really bleeding  a lot, so my sister-in-law took the towel and put it to his mouth. He got his phone and called 911 and my sister-in-law got her phone and both of them were trying to call 911. Then he put down the phone and he walked into the bathroom and turned on the shower, because he wanted to bathe, then he turned back and came out. He walked back in the bathroom and when he walked back in the bathroom, he collapse on the ground, but he wasn’t dead; he just dropped down because he was weak. Then my sister-in-law came and hold him and told him that she would go see if she could meet the Police and to let my two nephews hold their pa and and talk to their pa, so that he stays up. She went and when she came back, because she went to see if she saw the Police, because they don’t the street and when she came back she asked if he was already and they said yes. Before all of that happened, my nephew, the oldest one, went into the ceiling, he climbed up and the middle size one went underneath the bed and the three year old was vomiting and stooling himself and trembling.

It is the second brother that the family has lost to gun violence. In October of 2009, twenty-one year old Randy Coye was found dead inside the Lord’s Ridge Cemetery in Belize City, three days after neighbours heard cries for help in the area. The motive for the killing in that incident was unclear because, according to the family, Randy Coye was not a known trouble maker. It was believed that the real target then was his older brother Richard Russell who was shot a killed last night.

Jesse Mendoza
Why would someone want to kill your brother?

Andrea Russell – Sister of the deceased:
I have no idea. I wish I knew, but I don’t know anything.

vlcsnap-2013-05-17-21h24m14s115Police retrieved a single expended shell from the murder scene and has one person in custody for questioning pending the outcome of the investigation. Reporting for Plus New I am Jesse Mendoza.

Richard Russell, though he worked in Belmopan, is the second worker of Minister Anthony Boots Martinez to be killed this week.
