The 2014 CONCACAF Champions League tournament is slated to start on the 5th of August. Belize, represented by the Belmopan Bandits in this tournament, is matched up with Metapan from El Salvador, and Leon, the National Champions of Mexico.
According to Kenneth Budna, club manager for the Belmopan Bandits, if the field is not completed in time for inspection, Belize will not be allowed to participate in the tournament.
The date for inspection According to FFB executives is slated for June 19th and 20th, this Thursday and Friday.
So, with the date so close and the stadium still under apparent construction, we stopped by the Federation to ask the ultimate question, will it be ready on time?
“Certainly, since last night, we have been working on two shifts. So, the laying of the grass doesn’t take us a lot of time. So, the idea today is that all the irrigation and the pipes, which then, we only need 48 hours to complete the entire field with grass, by which all of those grasses are suppose to be in, no later than tomorrow”.
Reporter: “What is it as it is right now?”
As it is right now, we are trying in the balance of the pipes on the southern side of the pitch, which is the final line of the irrigation and the final line of the drainage and we are already up on almost half of the pitch of grass.
So, it is almost completed. What we are doing today is trying to ensure that they put down all the grass in the area that we have dressed already and then we have the other area prepared for when the other grass is here”.
The grass being laid on the fields is Bermuda Grass- a special type of grass required by FIFA standards.
