Fire destroys house near downtown Belize City

Fire destroys house near downtown Belize City. Residents of the Bishop and West Street area awoke to news of a fire before dawn on Sunday morning. According to police, they visited  49 Corner West and Bishop Street, Belize City, where they saw a green two storey wooden apartment building, valued at $72,000.00, property belonging to Hiram Baptist of Belize City engulfed in flames. A neighbour, Alicia Montejo, spoke to PLUS News.

Alicia Montejo – Neighbour:
vlcsnap-2013-03-05-08h28m08s31We woke up about 4 o’clock, to the call of my brother banging on the doors and windows of the house, saying that fire’s outside. So I ran out with the baby.  I was so frightened, I ran out in my underwear. When we came out, the whole centre of the house was already on fire, flaming up.  We could not breathe onside the house, smoked out.  My mam and I and the baby ran outside, and that was the end of it. We didn’t have any time to save anything. We thought the whole house was going to burn. My brother said the dogs were barking and barking and he could not sleep.  And when he came outside, that’s when he noticed that the house next door was on fire.

Police identified the man mentioned by Montejo as one Charles Herrera, 42, a security guard, who lived in an apartment on the upper flat of the building along with his common-law wife. Herrera told police that he was alerted to the fire when barking dogs in the area woke him up and he opened the entrance door of the apartment to see the fire in progress. According to police the cause of the fire is unknown but Ms. Montejo suspects possible arson:

Alicia Montejo – Neighbour:
There was a lady occupying the downstairs.  A lot of speculation went around the neighbourhood, when quarrels began with her, [she said] that she would burn down the house.  But nobody was paying her no mind. Nobody thought that she would have done it for real.  We don’t know if she do it.  I did not see, but from the speculations and what we heard ourselves, we could only think it could be her. So I’m saying it’s maybe a case of arson.

Police say no one was injured, but the building and contents, which are insured, were completely destroyed.
