An overnight fire over the weekend gutted a small cement building with zinc rooftop at Lovers Water Supply area in Punta Gorda.
The fire started sometime before midnight on Friday September 24th.
When police arrived at the scene they found the building already engulfed in flames.
Contrary to police reports the house was not abandoned. 22 year old Rigo Zuniga says he has been living there with his brother. He had left Punta Gorda for Belize City to find a job, and had not been home for a week and a half when he got the call.
“The building was in flames. I got the call at 12:27 a.m. on Saturday morning. Everything is totally destroyed. The house itself was [worth] 40 plus thousand dollars. The belongings inside was probably like maybe 15 or 17 thousand dollars.
I went to the Fire Department this morning trying to get a fire report, to submit to the bank, because I had a loan from the bank. That’s still at the preliminary stage right now.”
This is the second house in PG that has been scourged by fire in the past month.
Rigo Zuniga is convinced the two are related.
“I know for certain that it wasn’t something lit inside. Just before I left my gas was gone, because I made sure of that before I left.
My cousin, a couple of days ago, told me the electricity was just cut out, because I was going to send the money to pay that.
So, I’m pretty sure that it wasn’t an electrical fire.
There was a fire just a few weeks before that, and I believe that the same person that lit that fire on that house, is the same person that did mine.”
Rigo is seeking financial assistance to recover some of the things he lost in the fire. Anyone wishing to contribute can contact him at 628-7649 or can make a deposit at Belize bank 258124 Punta Gorda Branch.
