Football superstar to appear in court for fraud

vlcsnap-2013-06-20-19h01m10s48Argentina and Barcelona FC football superstar Lionel Messi is due in a Spanish court in September, accused of defrauding the Spanish state of over 4 million euros in taxes three times in the last few years – that’s over BZ$10 million, a quarter of his annual net salary of 16 million euro or over BZ$42 million – and they allege he was using a company based in Belize. According to the BBC, Spanish prosecutors allege that Messi, 25, and his father Jorge conspired to use companies in Belize and Uruguay to sell the rights to use his image in contracts with Banco Sabadell, Danone, Adidas, Pepsi-Cola, Proctor and Gamble and the Kuwait Food Company. They have denied the charges. Messi has won multiple titles in Spain and Europe and is a four-time FIFA World Player of the Year, but if he is found guilty here he faces a major fine and six years in prison.  The case will be heard on September 17.
