Foreign Minister says he wants credit for tougher Guatemala stance

vlcsnap-2013-10-18-10h43m51s50Ten days ago we brought you the reaction to Minister of Foreign Affairs Wilfred Elrington’s statement at the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York City on September 30. It provoked a strong reaction from Guatemala but otherwise caused hardly a ripple in the wake of multiple scandals rocking Government. But on Thursday the Minister took aim at local media for seemingly reporting the story with what appeared to him to be a pro-Guatemala stance.

Wilfred Elrington – Minister of Foreign Affairs

vlcsnap-2013-10-18-10h05m34s107“I have not spoken to Carrera and I am not concerned, to be candid, of what Carrera thought of the speech.   What concerned me was what Jules Vazques thought of the speech.   I’ve never heard him make a comment on it.   I didn’t say I applaud the Foreign Minister for standing up so robustly for Belize or nothing like that.   The suggestion was that, again, the Foreign Minister might have messed up because we offended Guatemalans.   I can’t comprehend the mentality of our people or of our media, ah?   I speak up in defense of Belize, I spoke it through.   I said what I had told Carrera more than once at the OAS, and you know, I got the impression that the media was taking Guatemala’s side!   The media was sympathetic with Guatemala and the position with the Guatemalans!   What about us?   Don’t we have spine?   Don’t we have…now, are we not patriotic?   Should we not have joined in and said, well, we thought that was a good representation in the part of our country or that the Prime Minister was speaking the truth, and that the Guatemalan position has got to be one  that has to be a posture?   But that was not said.   There was a deafening silence in te part of every media in Belize.   I’m not surprised”.

The Minister did not rule out a possible meeting with Guatemala down the road.

Hon. Wilfred Elrington

“The SG of the OAS was at the UN when I gave the speech…we met with them.   As matter of fact, we had tried to meet with the Guatemalan Foreign Minister before we made the speech at the UN, but he had, according to our report, he was not out there at the time.   If not I would have been available after November 7th, to make new plans.   But I am always prepared to make new plans on my counterpart…I am always prepared to discuss.   I believe that it is always healthy to discuss and dialogue on matter of national importance”.
