Galen University held its summer 2013 commencement exercise. The institution was founded in September of 2003 with an initial intake of 14 students. As an independent university chartered by the Government of Belize, Galen has grown its student population to around 500 in Fall 0f 2012. And this past Sunday, recognized its ninth outtake of students. Shadel Young, reports.
Men and women from across the country arrived at a new chapter of their lives, as they became alumni of the National Galen University of Belize. Sunday marked the university’s ninth commencement exercise and consisted of students from the Associate Science in Business Administration, Bachelor of Science in Accounting, Business Administration, Environmental Science and Marketing, Bachelor of Arts in International Business and Master of Business Administration. But this milestone, says President Dr. Louis Zabaneh, is more than attaining a degree.
Dr. Louis Zabaneh – President Galen University:
Addressing the graduates was Mayor of Belize City Darrel Bradley, who holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology and International Studies, a Bachelor of Law Degree and a Master of Arts Degree in Public Administration.
Mayor Darrell Bradley:
I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean. Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens. Promise me that you’ll give faith a fighting chance, and when you get the chance to sit it out, I hope you dance. Remember that every achievement in any life, no matter how small, was the result of someone taking action, and the only real regret in life is the regret that comes from never having tried. You will find many times that you will get the opportunity to sit things out. Never, ever, sit it out. Always, always dance. The things that are most important in life cannot be purchased with money. They cannot be earned with grades or degrees. There are things which are felt with the heart. They have to do with moments that are shared with others, and about relationships, about self-awareness and spiritual and emotional growth, about learning not only from books but from personal experiences and the experiences of others.
Receiving the Honorary Doctor of Philosophy Degree was Jane Ellen Marie Usher, Justice of the Peace and CBE. Ms. Jane Usher has contributed significantly to Belize politically and more prominently as the steward of the Holy Redeemer Credit Union.
Marian McNab – Member of the Board of Trustees:
With her prudent yet efficient leadership, Ms Jane, as she is fondly known, has guided this iconic institution to the force that it has become in our society. Many Belizeans have been educated, have built their homes, or have implemented entrepreneurial establishments, due to the financial support of HRCU. Many years ago, Ms Jane was a pioneer president of the British Honduras Credit Union League. Throughout her tenure, she has served on the Board of Directors of HRCU, and was awarded the Golden Eagle Award for outstanding service to the Credit Union Movement, in 2001. The scope of her influence and contribution to the credit Union Movement goes beyond national borders, for she received the Distinguished Service Award from the Jamaica Cooperative Credit Union League, in 2012. In recognition of over 70 years of outstanding service to Belize, Galen university invites you to congratulate Jane Ellen Marie Usher, our beloved Ms Jane, as a recipient of the Honorary Doctor of Philosophy Degree.
They gained global respect for rejecting a match fixing offer at this year’s Gold Cup and at Sunday’s graduation ceremony; Ian Gaynair and Woodrow West were presented with the Galen Eagle Award For Integrity and Sportsmanship.
In academics, sports and the arts, Galen University says it remains one of the country’s premier tertiary institution, with a steadfast commitment to the Sustainable Development of Belize.
