And while we were on the topic of Belize’s competitiveness of Agriculture in the Food Sector, We asked Director of Extension Belarmino Esquivel, to comment on the very controversial issue of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s) and whether or not Belize should exploit this technology.
The Government has so far remained neutral on this topic, however, Esquivel told us despite the religious sentiments of some stakeholders they are looking at a more inclusive and holistic approach.
“It is a very controversial issue right now. So, the Government’s position has been to come up with a strategy, so that we can set up our position clearly as it relates top the GMO agricultural products, and, yes, we have contacted people who have out rightly said “no” to GMO because of their religious beliefs, but i believe that we should look at a more inclusive and holistic approach of wjhen we are developing this strategy and of course, to look at the socioeconomic implications that it has, not only for the country itself, but also for the export potential that it might have. But like I have said, but right now, we don’t have a clear directions as to say where we stand until we have the strategy finalized”.
The Ministry has sought the assistance of IICA in developing this strategy, which according to Esquivel, should be finalized by next year.
