Guatemalan Caught with Contraband in Belize, Amidst Crackdown in Melchor

vlcsnap-2014-01-14-16h46m17s12Yesterday, we reported on the  anti-contraband operation launched in neighbouring Melchor de Mencos that led to the arrest of 37 suspected smugglers.

12 are still believed to be at large and residents in Benque say that they fear that some of the fugitives may have crossed the border into Belize and are hiding out in the country.

It may be familiar terrain to the contrabandistas, as regional news outlets have reported that the group had been smuggling goods from Belize.

While security efforts to crackdown on this ring continues in Guatemala, local authorities in Belize are too seeking to  clean-up the illicit trade.

On this past Sunday, at about 8:15 at dark, acting upon a tip, the cops visited the Bullet Tree Road near Santa Familia Village in Cayo District.  There, they came upon a White International 4900 moving truck travelling on the road.  The truck bearing a Belmopan license plate.

The vehicle was pulled over and when checks were made inside the container, and the law enforcement agents found 260 sacks of Black Beans suspected to be contraband.  The vehicle along with its content was taken to the San Ignacio Police Station pending investigation.  Police detained a 20 year old Guatemalan national and a 25 year old resident of Billy White Village.
