As we reported, yesterday, a Guatemalan was reportedly killed in the Chiquibul National Park, in an area known as Rio Blanco. It was reported that the body was discovered at approximately 10:00 a.m., yesterday, 500 meters into the Belize side. Further, the information was given to Belize’s Attaché in Guatemala by the Guatemalan Armed Forces saying that it was a Guatealan Soldier; however, it was not until news time, that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a release confirming the death of a Guatemalan, with no particulars. Prior to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issuing that release, the Prensa Libre reported on the matter; however, their report contained an error since they claimed that the bodies of two Guatemalan men were found in the Adjacency Zone. Prensa Libre reported the Guatemalan, Edwardo Samuel Caal, who was found murdered on the Coastal Road on Monday, as one of the victims found in the Chiquibul National Park. The other Guatemalan mentioned in their news report is Marvin Cristobal Chappa. The Guatemalan authorities were alerted to the incident by Guatemalan residents who reside in the area, near the Adjacency Zone. According to Guatemalan media, the soldier died due to blows to the head and officials have reportedly retrieved two rocks stained with blood, which they believe were used in the incident. This evening, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement saying that a joint operation conducted by the Organization of American States (OAS) along with the Belize Defence Force (BDF), Belize Forensic Department and Guatemalan officials, located the body of a male individual in the Chiquibul National Park around 4:00 p.m. today after a search was conducted in that area. The body was located in the Ceibo Chico area some 7.87 kilometers east of the Adjacency Line. The body has been retrieved and is being transported to Belize by BDF helicopter for further examination.
