Guatemalan found in Belizean Territory

Another Guatemalan has been found in Belizean territory. On Thursday 22nd, 28 year old Guatemalan national Elfido Francisco Cano was detained in the Chiquibul National Park by Belize Defense force and Special Patrol Unit of the Police Department. According to Police, while still on the farm, Cano was interviewed and he confessed that he  along with other relatives have been cultivating beans, corn and pumpkin for about a year inside Belizean territory. Cano was caught harvesting on a beans patch that is about 1kilometer in extent. Police reports Cano saying that the patch was planted by 10 or more persons from the community of San Marcos, Guatemala. Cano was found with a .22 rifle with three live rounds in his possession. The detainee was handed over to the San Ignacio Police on Friday the 23rd of February. Friends for conservation and development  has been purposely planning and implementing patrols with other agencies aimed at controlling the expansion of the agricultural frontier in the Chiquibul Forest, under a two-year project funded by the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
