Hattieville man lured to death in Ladyville?

29 year old Denver Owin Jones of Hattieville, Belize District, is the second man from that village to die in the last few days. He was found dead lying face up on a road connecting Marage Road in Ladyville to Lake Garden community, with a single gunshot wound to the left cheek, around 9:30 on Valentine’s Day evening.

According to police, he went alone into the road, leaving three friends behind in his vehicle, but did not come out alive. The question is, did someone call him to do business in an unlit area which resulted in his death?

Superintendent Hilberto Romero, who is in charge of Criminal Investigation Branch for Eastern Division, which includes the entire Belize District, says police have not established a motive but are looking at that angle and others.

“That is an isolated area and we are looking at all angles to see if he was lured there or that is an area that he frequents.”

“We know that Mr Jones had been a suspect in a shooting in Ladyville some months earlier.  Do you have any idea if it might have been retaliatory?”

.

Superintendent  Hilberto Romero

“That’s an angle that we are looking at. We’ll review the file to see who these persons were. Yes, he had been charged for that shooting incident that occurred in Ladyville.”

.

We also spoke to the sister of the deceased who says her brother will be greatly missed.

[Paraphrased]  “I don’t know nothing much.  All I know is that he was with me earlier in the evening.  He asked me to borrow our vehicle.  He said he would come back soon. That was the last thing he said to me.  He talked to my ma downstairs.”

.

The sister also told the media that her brother had told the family that his life was being threatened since last year.

[Paraphrased]  “My brother was someone who didn’t talk much.  So last year when he told me, ‘Deidra, they threatened my life,’  I was shocked that he even said that.

When I looked on Facebook last night, one young lady commented under the news and put ‘LOL – Laughing out loud.’  When I saw the message I couldn’t believe it.  Something like that I wouldn’t tell to my worst enemy.  What’s so funny about that?  I don’t need any revenge from no one. Their conscience will be their guide, because nothing that they do, could ever give me back my brother. They could find who did it or don’t find anyone at all.  I could care less. They can’t hurt him anymore.”

.

Superintendent Romero told PLUS News that the three friends detained by police after the incident are cooperating and giving statements to police. Police are also checking to see if, as reported, Jones told police that his life was under threat. According to Superintendent Romero, the sequence of events has police believing that Jones was not dragged or otherwise forced out of his vehicle, and they believe his business with his possible alleged killer may have resulted in his death.

Superintendent  Hilberto Romero

“The investigation revealed that he went there by himself, leaving the car on the roadside where it was found, with the other occupants.

He walked into that dark area.  Apparently that is where the shooting occurred.

We’re looking at all angles of it.  He went there.  He was supposed to come to Belize City thereafter.  So he went there on his own.  Something transpired there.  As a result he was shot.”

.

Police have not formally detained anyone at this time.
