Hon. Julius Espat comments on PAC Meeting

vlcsnap-2013-09-26-08h06m31s205PlusNews has confirmed that Julius Espat is out of the country but we managed to make contact with him on Wednesday and  asked him about his take on the PAC meeting aired live on television earlier.  He said that “at the end of the day the people of Belize will be the ones to benefit from any public hearing. Please remember it took us an entire year of public pressure for them to agree that the meetings be held public. Reform and change is not instantaneous. It will take time and constant pressure for any system to change. Any Government activity aired publicly is a plus for Accountability and Transparency.” However, Julius Espat is not happy that the focus is on the previous PUP government’s financial activities. He told us on Wednesday that, The government is trying to distract the people from looking at the real issues. If we do not address the present issues affecting us as a nation, then we are failing our people. If the Prime Minister wants to study history, he has a right to do so through a vehicle called the Special Select Committee. The PAC has been hijacked and this is a violation of the Standing orders.” While the PUP has boycott the hearings, the three senators that they had suggested be included in the restructuring of the Public Accounts Committee, did show up in an advisory capacity on the invitation of PAC. We asked him how he felt about that. He said, “I just hope they were not pressured.”
