Honduran National Shot Twice by Police Officers in Toledo

Over the weekend, Wilmer Antonio Nunez, Resident of Bella Vista Village in Toledo, was shot by police officers twice when all other methods of subduing him failed. Our Dangriga Correspondent Harrry Arzu has the story.

vlcsnap-2013-12-10-10h10m47s254man with machete“A resident of Bella Vista is hospitalized at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City as a result of gunshot wounds he sustained by police for the weekend.  Reports are that on December 8th at about 8:30 p.m., 22 year old Honduran national, Wilmer Antonio Nunez entered Nuevo Amanecer bar located in the said village and demanded money from the owner. When the proprietor refused to meet his demands, Nunez left the bar shortly after and returned with a machete and began to scare all and began to ransack the establishment.  Independence Police were called to the scene where they warned Nunez to calm down, but instead he advanced towards them with the machete in a swinging motion.  Police then fired a single warning shot to apprehend Nunez.  When he continued to advance towards them, police shot Nunez on his left toe.  He managed to escape from them and as a result, police set chase after Nunez, and shortly after, Belize Police Logo 2013Nunez was apprehended, but not before another gunshot wound that he sustained to his right thigh.  Nunez was subsequently arrested and transported to the Southern Regional Hospital in Dangriga and later to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City, where he is listed in a stable condition.  Nunez will be charged for four counts of Aggravated Assault, Damage to Property and Threatening words”.
