Incident against Police Officer leads to arrest of 7 Individuals

There was an incident on Saturday, March 12th 2016 along the banks of the Mopan River, in Benque Viejo Town, in the Cayo District where the police were ambushed and threatened by a group of Hispanic persons. According to reports, Benque Viejo Police were conducting foot patrols by the Planting Patch Area, along the banks of the Mopan River and had detained two Hispanic male persons for un-customed goods. Whilehaving them detained, a female Hispanic person along with eight other Hispanic male persons, ambushed the police with rocks and machetes in their hands, demanding the release of the two male persons, shouting in Spanish, ” Lets’ Kill the Police Officers”. They were all advancing towards the Police in a threatening manner ; some pointing their machetes towards the Police, others with rocks  raised above their heads. One of the officers then pulled out his service .38 Revolver and instructed the persons to stop, however they kept shouting in Spanish, ”  Lets’ Kill the Police, it’s only two of them,” and began to surround the Police officers. One of the officers quickly called for backup and when other police officers arrived, all persons quickly left the area and went over to the other side of the banks of the Mopan River. On Monday 4th April 2016, a special western Regional Operations was launched with Benque Viejo Police, San Ignacio Police and Special Patrol Unit which resulted in the detention of 29 year old Merari Lopez, a Belizean Domestic Worker,  46 year old Santos Osorio ,a Belizean Mason, 35 year old Herson Lopez , a  Belizean Labour, 28 year old Julio Portillo a Belizean Labourer, and 30 year old Mirahim Lopez a Belizean Mason, all of them residents  of Church Hill Street. They were all arrested and charged for the crime of Aggravated Assault and Threatening Words.
