Special Envoy for Women and Children Kim Simplis Barrow has targeted the end of the year for the opening of the Inspiration Center for children with special needs. Back-to-back Inspiration Telethons have raised over $1.5 million for construction and the center, located on the George Price Highway, is very close to completion.
Kim Simplis Barrow, Special Envoy for Women & Children
I take this opportunity to again thank all those who contributed generously to making the telethon in June such a success. We’re very, very grateful and it has indeed helped us a lot to move the project forward. We are still raising funds for the Inspiration Center, that will be an ongoing project because of sustainability and just ensuring that the center is run properly. We are looking at several international fundraisers and the next one that’s coming up is in LA, in Los Angeles, so I’m hoping that with all our Belizean friends and families in the Los Angeles area will come out an support a worthy cause. We’re also looking at Florida, Houston and New York in perhaps the upcoming year for additional fundraisers. In terms of deadline for the Inspiration Center, we met yesterday with the contractor and we’re talking about October/November completion date for this year that is. So we’re again very pleased that we’re sticking with our goals and objectives of meeting the deadline this year, so we’re hoping that we’ll be able to have an opening in December.
The work continues to define the role of the Center, as the Special Envoy goes on to explain.
Kim Simplis Barrow, Special Envoy for Women & Children:
We’re still looking at quotations for equipment which is to equip each room individually. As you know, each room requires different types of equipment to treat patients. So we have to be very keen on what type of equipment for each room is required, so we’re working on that. We’re also working, as we go along, on the strategic plan, the operational plan, for the Center. It’s very important that we have all of that ready for the grand opening. So we’re looking at the whole internal structure of the Inspiration Center. That’s working along quite well.
