International Pageant promotes Mayan Culture

In September of 2013 the lovely Miss Vania Pat, of Succotz Village, Cayo District, won the Miss Queen of the West Beauty Pageant. Vania, 20 years of age and fluent in three languages- English, Spanish, and Maya, has been competing in beauty pageants since the age of 15 and has won many entitles. Her latest win was at the international stage.

On Friday last week Vania left the country to represent Belize at the Mister and Miss Culture International Maya pageant held in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, where she competed against 5 other delegates who are from Guatemala, Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and USA Latino.

The delegates were judged on several different categories including grace, posture, and body shape during swim wear and evening gown. However the most important segment of the pageant was the pre-Hispanic presentation which according to Vania was the definitive factor of her victory.

“The last presentation was the Pre-Hispanic Presentation, that’s the most valuable  presentation, because right there they decide who best represents their country, and that’s why I won the Best Ambassador, because I spoke my three languages, and I defended my country, and I enplaned what all Belize entailed.

The Mayan culture has vanished away.  Only certain villages, for example in Toledo District, they practice their religion, their language, their lifestyle.  So I think it has vanished.  So that’s why this pageant is just to enhance and just  bringing back the Mayan culture into life.”

As the Miss Culture International Maya, Vania Pat will be travelling in Central American to learn more about the Maya Culture in other countries in Central America.
