Today, March 8th, is being observed as International Women’s Day. Kim Simplis Barrow, the Special Envoy for Women and children, issued a video statement in commemoration of the day.
Kim Simplis Barrow, Special Envoy for Women and Children: It is a time of women empowerment, but it is also a time of reflection on the progress made on gender equity and equality. It is also a time of commitment to renew our status co, to ensure the advancement of women and girls. Over the years we have witnessed a transfer in women legal rights, educational achievements, and participation. Yet, while tremendous progress has been made, we cannot claim to be entirely free from stereotypes and gender biases which tells us that our journey on the road to equality is far from over and that more collective effort is needed if we intend to actively implement the 2030 agenda for sustainable development. Through public action we can put an end to inequalities and in-discrimination that suppress our women and ultimately our development. We need more policies in programs that work for women and girls, better daughter and greater accountability at all levels.
