Eldrid Neal and Marvin Mora have both been fighting against allegations that they made racially charged comments during a private conversation that was recorded and leaked to the media. Those recordings have been aired publicly and the two can be heard making comments directly about Garinagu people. It has led to outrage and the request of Eldrid’s resignation from the presidency of the Public Service Union. Another person who has joined in on the conversation over the alleged racist remarks is leader of the Opposition, Honorable John Briceño. You may recall that Briceno himself was once privately recorded regarding statements made against his own party and that was leaked to the media. Even so, privacy issue aside, Briceno says that Neal’sstatements cannot be excused:
Hon. John Briceno, Leader of the Opposition: I am disappointed that in this day and age that we have people that still have those types of views. I think it was the father of the nation that started out saying in the PUP that “All a we da one.” All of us are the same in this country, and I’ve said it over and over. it doesn’t matter if you were born in Orange Walk Town or Crico Saco; we are all the same be it if you’re rich or you’re poor, if you’re smart or intelligent, whatever race you are, we are all one. That is what makes us unique in this country, the diversity that we have. And we need to embrace this diversity and like everybody else I think we all need to condemn these kind of inflammatory language that is being used. Any sort of racism or any sort of looking down at any group of people, any category of people; be it religion, be it sexual orientation, be it by race or by economic standards, we need to condemn it and we need to condemn it 100%.
