The environmental community is morning the passing of Lionel “Chocolate” Heredia of Caye Caulker, Belize District, at the age of 83. Heredia died at home Friday afternoon due to complications from an aneurysm, in the company of his wife Annie of 25 years. A former fisherman and water taxi owner, he is best known for organizing the establishment of the Swallow Caye Wildlife Sanctuary and working with the conservation community, particularly on the protection of manatees who have become increasingly endangered from passing boat propellers. Heredia in 2011 received an OCEANA Ocean Hero award for his efforts. Funeral arrangements have not been finalized.
