Football star Lionel Messi and his father are to stand trial in Spain for tax fraud due to allegedly hiding money in Belize. Barcelona and Argentina’s star Lionel Messi and his father are facing three counts of tax fraud that could translate to prison sentences. In a court filing, Messi and his father were accused in 2013 of defrauding the tax system of $4.69MillionUS in taxes related to Messi’s image rights between 2007 and 2009. It is alleged that the father and son managed to pull this off for years due to the creation of fake companies in Belize and Uruguay. Tax evasions by citizens in countries like America have resulted in those banks severing ties with some Belizean banks where their citizens have shell companies and offshore accounts to avoid taxation in those countries. Belize Bank and Atlantic International in Belize have already lost their US Banking ties as the de-risking process continues.
