The Rotary Club of San Ignacio honored Luis Carballo as the recipient of the Paul Harris Award. The Paul Harris award recognizes outstanding commitment to a community and outstanding work in one’s vocation. Carballo received the award as an educational leader who strives to make his community a a better place. Dr. Lynee Paradis of the Rotary Club told us more about the award.
Dr. Lynne Paradis: Oh good heavens no this is International. Paul Harris fellowships are given in all of the countries in the world that have Rotary Clubs, but there’s funding attached to it. You have to make a considerable donation to Rotary international or somebody has to make that on your behalf and then awards the fellowship in your name, and as you saw the San Ignacio Rotary Club awarded one this year. But you would find every year there are many Paul Harris fellows but always they have to meet the criteria of outstanding candidates.
And according to Rotary San Ignacio, Luis Carballo meets that criteria. Carballo has been working along with schools on the Rotary bathroom Project as well as the Literacy ALive projects in school. Carballo also worked on helping to gert computers donated to schools. He says he was happy for the recognition though he is not the only one working hard.
Louis Carballo, Recipient of the Paul Harris Award: I appreciate the award and I would like to thank them, because a lot of the work, I only supervise, I only guide them and a lot of the work is done by the Rotarians, by my staff, by the principals in my different schools and especially the volunteer Rotarians from Canada, and the volunteer teachers that come from Canada. They are the ones who come and train us and things like that for us to get better so that we can go back to the classroom and improve our literacy sy stem in Cayo.
