Man sentenced to prison for running through police checkpoint

vlcsnap-2013-08-21-08h00m23s134An  Orange Walk father and businessman of Northern Belize is serving a one year sentence imposed upon him Tuesday evening, after he pleaded guilty to running into a police officer at a checkpoint in Hattieville. He is 50 year old David Carrillo of Orange Walk District.  Tuesday evening, Mr Carrillo who was unrepresented, appeared before Magistrate Dale Cayetano in the courtroom where he was slapped with a single charge of aggravated assault with a motor vehicle. Allegations are that yesterday, Monday, August 19, Mr Carrillo with the use of his vehicle, ran a checkpoint in Hattieville and ran into Police Constable Yann Chin.  In court, David Carrillo wasted no time and pleaded guilty to the offense but the jail term he was imposed evidently shocked him. It appears Carrillo was under the impression that as a first time offender for such an offense he would be fined only and given time to pay while he goes home. But that was not the case for Mr Carrillo.  According to the police facts, last night sometime between 9:00 – 9:30, officers were conducting a checkpoint in front of the Hattieville Police Station. At about 9:40 p.m., PC Chin was standing beside another vehicle, when David Carillo, driving a  Grand Marquis vehicle, approached the checkpoint. A few minutes later, the Grand Marquis, cut the line and proceeded to drive through the checkpoint.  That’s when PC Chin had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit. The vehicle was pursued and eventually caught.
