34 year old Marlon Bonner is a Port Loyola resident, scion of a well-known family who have lived in the troubled area for many years and are easy going people. That did not stop an unmasked gunman from shooting Bonner dead as he was playing basketball at the corner of Faber’s Road and Central American Boulevard on Sunday evening. With more here is ACP Chester Williams, officer commanding Eastern Division South.
ACP Chester Williams, Officer Commanding Eastern Division South: Sometime around four p.m. on yesterday’s date, Police were called to the basketball court at the corner of Faber’s Road and Central American Boulevard where upon arrival the lifeless body of one Marlon Bonner was seen. He was transported to the K.H.M.H. where he was pronounced dead on arrival by the doctors at that institution. What we have gathered so far is that Mr. Banner was playing basketball on the basketball court as he normally does every Sunday when a gunman came and approached him and fired shots at him which resulted in his demise. At this time we have not been able to determine a motive and I must state that from our investigation and what we know Mr. Banner is not a member and is not affiliated with any gang, so I do not want anybody to be out there saying that he is affiliated with any gang and it is gang related. We do not think it is gang related so we’re investigating to see if we can arrive at a motive as to what may have led to that unfortunate incident yesterday
Witnesses in the area say that the gunman didn’t disguise himself, so police were able to gather information as to his identity. On a related note, while Bonner’s death is not gang-affiliated according to ACP Williams, it does bring to light the problem of the reluctance of eyewitnesses to give a police statement. ACP Williams informed that they continue interventions to mitigate the gang-problem in south side Belize City.
