Orange Walk resident Matthew Williams appeared in the Orange Walk Town Magistrate’s Court before Senior Magistrate Merlene Moody to answer charges of unlawful possession of a passport. According to police a sting operation at Williams’ home in July of 2011 saw the recovery of multiple Belizean passports including that of attorney and former OCEANA vice-president Audrey Matura-Shepherd, who spoke to PLUS News today.
Mrs. Audrey Matura-Shepherd- Victim of Passport Identity Theft
“Well, what happened, I only went as a witness today in a case; what happened in 2006, I have lost my passport when my vehicle was broken into and my purse and everything had been stolen. I reported it in September 2006 and I never heard anything about it. It was until last year that the G.S.U., apparently was doing an apprehension in Orange Walk, went into the home of one Matthew Williams. They told me that they had located my passport among the documents there, but they wanted me to verify it because they wanted to make sure that it was mine because the picture, although it had everything about me, the picture was not my picture; it was someone else’s picture. And so, I had to go and give evidence today and identified the passport and provide the information to the police”.
The case had been adjourned several times this year because Williams was without his attorney, but today it proceeded with Williams acting in his own defense. Matura-Shepherd and others testified in court and that testimony concluded around 11:00 this morning, ending the prosecution’s presentation of the case. The case resumes on October 29 with presentation from the defense.
