Maya Mopan man murdered; body dumped in Belize River

A Belmopan resident of Maya Mopan was murdered on  Sunday morning, his body thrown into the Belize River near Agripinno CAwichvlcsnap-2016-04-12-15h19m25s358 bridge, the bridge leading towards Valley of Peace. The victim was 39 year  old  Luis Ostuardo Ortiz , also known as “Chapin”. According to police,  sometime after 3:00 a.m.  on Sunday 10th April 2016, A group of friends were socialising at La Cabana night club after which Luis Ortiz  was taking home 40 year old Jose Gonzalez in his 1999 Chevy Prism. When passing in front of the Roaring Creek burial ground,  Ortiz and Gonzales were assaulted by some male persons who then threw Gonzalez in some bushes off the highway. Gonzales received a cut wound to his head and abrasions on his back.

Later in the morning, About 6:00 am the car of Luis Ortiz was found in the river by the Agripino Cawich Bridge, The body was not found at that stage but about 10:45am there about, the body of Luis Ortiz was found in the river by the Police.vlcsnap-2016-04-12-15h20m00s828

The green 1999 Chevy Prism car was later found submerged in the river in the Young Bank area of Camalote Village. Police pulled the vehicle out of the water  and processed it at the Belmopan Police Station. Theere was no sign of Ortiz. A search for his body in the river commenced at daybreak and by 10:45 a.m. the lifeless body of Luis Ortiz, Belizean carpenter of Maya Mopan Belmopan, was found in the Belize Old River near Agripino Cawich Bridge. The body had a cut wound to the back of the head and injury to the lower left eye. Belmopan Police have since detained 6 men.

Insp. Stephanie Grinage, Assistant Officer Commanding Belmopan Formation: At this time we have six persons in custody and pending our investigation, No charges has been levied as yet but until we are certain what charges we be brought against these young men we will definitely let the media know. 

Those detained include a  41 year old Belizean of Young Gal Road Teakettle Village, a 24 year old Belizean of Roaring Creek Village, a 22 year old Belizean of Roaring Creek Village, a 19 year old Belizean of Roaring Creek, a 38 year Belizean of Roaring Creek and a 48 year Belizean of Roaring Creek Village for investigation of murder.
