Melonie Coye and Arthur Saldivar reach settlement in money dispute

Former Belize Rural North Standard Bearer for the People’s United Party (PUP), Arthur Saldivar, and his former clients Melonie and Marlene Coye, have apparently reached a settlement in their dispute over some $900,000 that Coye claimed Saldivar withheld from her when they went to collect the over $1.5 million in cash stored in the Central Bank, which the Court of Appeal had ordered returned to Coye and her family last March, after their appeal against a money laundering conviction vlcsnap-2015-01-30-05h10m52s182was upheld and the conviction overturned.

This and other allegations had led to the PUP first suspending, then stripping Arthur Saldivar of his Standard Bearership, after an internal investigation.

But it appears it is all over, according to Senior Counsel Hubert Elrington,, who spoke with reporters at the end of Thursday’s case management conference before Justice Shona Griffith.

“The parties have kissed and made up.”

“Does that include monies being returned?”

.

Hubert Elrington
“All I can say is that they are on good a term as they ever been.”

.

Reporter
“That would be like prior to the legal wranglings?”

.

Hubert Elrington
“I don’t know if there were legal wranglings.  I supposed once they understood the nature of the claim and the position that both parties were in, the sensible thing was use their legal skills to settle the matter.”

.

According to Hubert Elrington, the details of the agreement were not privy to him and will not be privy to the public, as there is a non-disclosure agreement which does not permit the parties to discuss the settlement. So it is not immediately clear if Arthur Saldivar had to actually pay back any money, or admit fault.

“Are you able to tell us if Mr. Arthur Saldivar owes the Coye family anything?”

.

Hubert Elrington
“Nothing. After the settlement, nothing. That’s what I understand. I haven’t seen the settlement. Nobody had told me what the contents of the settlement is. The matter is the court has been told and the discontinuance order has been filed, which says that the matter is over. Amen.”

.

Reporter

“Can you tell us, does Mr. Saldivar have any money?”

.

Hubert Elrington
“I can’t tell you anything, except that the thing is over. Over means over.”

.

The Coyes declined comment, citing the terms of the agreement, while leaving court and Arthur Saldivar ducked the media after his court appearance.

While the biggest worry over his head appears to be cleared, Mr Saldivar does have other issues with clients that must be settled before he can jump back into politics for the PUP, whose leader has said he cannot run for them without doing so.
