Mennonite Dies in Fatal RTA

There was a fatal road traffic accident last night around 8:50 pm that claimed the life of 39 year old Mennonite Johan Knelsen of camp 13, Shipyard Village, Orange Walk. According to reports, 39 year old Knelsen was travelling in his horse and cart buggy, along with his wife and two kids, heading in a Northerly direction from San Felipe to August Pine ridge when a black Toyota Hilux pickup, driven at the time by 38 year old David Blatz, crashed into them from the rear, fatally wounding 39 year old Knelsen. Assistant Superintendent Selwyn Tillett, Officer Commanding Orange Walk Police Station told us more.

“In the middle of the highway was a black Toyota Hilux  pickup, license plate BZE35789. Very damaged was the front portion while sene on the extreme right hand of the road when travelling from San Felipe to August Pine Ridge, was the lifeless body of a male Mennonite, identified as Johan Knelsen, laborer of camp 13, Shipyard Village, Mennonite community. Initial reports revealed that David Blatz, Belizean engineer of an Orange Walk Town address was driving a black 2014 Toyota Hilux Pickup on the San Felipe road from the direction of San Felipe towards August Pine Ridge. upon reaching quarter mile on the August Pine Ridge road, he collided to the rear of a buggy that was being pulled by horse. inside the buggy was Johan Knelsen, of camp 13 Shipyard, his wife and two minors age two years and 7 months respectively. Johan Knelsen died on the scene the others were transported to Northern Regional Hospital where they are in a stable condition.”


Police have collected a urine sample from David Blatz to test for alcohol levels and have served him with a notice of intended prosecution. Police continue investigations.
