Many Belizeans suffering from chronic mental disorders like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder depend on medications like risperidone to function normally in society. Risperidone, though not entirely free of side effects, has been proven as a useful medication and is probably the cheapest of the atypical antipsychotics according to the Cayo Consumer Association. In 2004, this medication and others like it, were made available to patients free of cost in all 8 government dispensaries. In April of 2015, we reported that the medications were not in any of the Government outlets across the country due to a shortage on the suppliers’ part. A couple days later, all 8 Government dispensaries were restocked. Today, we were reliably informed by a member of the Cayo Mental Health Consumer Association that the Government dispensaries have once again run out of the medication. According to the member, the medication has been unavailable for over a month, which is creating a financial and emotional strain on patients. The member told Plus News that she has tried to contact the Ministry of Health and their Area Representative, but to no avail. We will continue to follow this story.
