Mexican on Ammunition Jumps Bail

vlcsnap-2014-02-19-22h11m09s168Chetumal student 23 year old Zurisaday Villasenor Mendez was due back in court this morning for the continuation of his trial on firearms and ammunition charges. In October 2012 he was busted at the Las Vegas Casino and Hotel but his case, initially heard in Corozal, was transferred to Belize City because presiding Magistrate Narda Morgan was subject to threats.

Attorneys Ellis Arnold SC and Arthur Saldivar filed in the Supreme Court alleging that Morgan should not be hearing the case because she is out of jurisdiction, having been assigned to San Ignacio court.

supreme courtThe Supreme Court recently turned down that motion and it was scheduled to be appealed. But in court this morning, neither Mendez nor his attorneys were present and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest.

Mendez is out on bail of $75,000 granted by Justice Troadio Gonzalez on February 7, but he had had to surrender his travel documents to authorities as condition for his bail. The matter is adjourned pending Mendez’s arrest.//[
