Today Minister of National Security John Saldivar and Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Manuel Heredia Jr. were grilled on the ongoing crime situation, which has hurt Belize in two dimensions. With 13 murders reported in January and two more to date, Belize has had a poor start to the year in that category, though Minister Saldivar pointed out that most of those murders were crimes of passion and personal disputes, which are more difficult to police than the gang and drug wars which police have clamped down on. Still, he told us, especially with regard to the deaths of Anne Swaney and Matthiew Klinck, it is a serious situation which police are taking seriously. In the tourism sector, there have been a rash of drowning deaths at major snorkelling sites in recent months, the most recent being that of Jeffrey Bartl at Hol Chan Marine Reserve. That has prompted Minister Heredia to call for more health checks for visitors to Belize, many of whom are older and prone, he said, to overexcitement.
