The Ministry of Forestry, Fisheries and Sustainable Development, today was the recipient of three vehicles via the UNDP. The initiative is a part of the Enhancing Belize’s Resilience to Adapt to the Effects of Climate Change Project. The project is aimed at ensuring that the Government of Belize is able to adequately adapt to climate change. The ministry says that the vehicles received today will aid significantly in this initiative. Minister Liesel Alamilla told us how the vehicles will be distributed within the ministry.
Minister Liesel Alamilla:
These speakers that we’re receiving today, one will be under the care and use of the Climate Change Unit, which is under my Ministry, and two will be used by the Forest Department. The project that we’re implementing is called “Enhancing Belize’s Resilience to adapt to the effects of Climate Change.” This unit and Department are going to be doing very important work in ensuring that the Government od Belize is prepared to build resilience and adapt to the impacts of Climate Chance.
Ann Gordon, the Coordinator of Climate Change told us more about the role the new vehicles will play in her department.
Ann Gordon – Coordinator of Climate Change:
With respect to our office, we have a number 0f committments when it comes to our response to Climate Change, and so this vehicle will assist us in our coordination on a whole at a national level, with respect to building our capacity to respond to the impacts of Climate Change in Belize. THis vehicle will be assisting us in that coordination, because we will be working across Ministries, and also along private sector and NGOs.
The program is funded by the European Union and aims to strengthen the capacity of the government in its efforts to adapt to climate change. We spoke with the assistant representative of the United Nations Development Program, who told us more about the overall program.
