A mother of two children who almost perished in a fire is now in prison. Twenty five year old Shanel Robinson was arraigned in court this morning on child abandonment. According to police reports, the Belize City mother left her two children, ages three and four, alone in their apartment home on Cannon Dale Drive on Thursday. The house caught on fire and the children were trapped inside as the mother had locked the door from outside. A neighbor saw smoke coming from the window of the house and the faces of the two children were pressed up against the window as they cried out for help. Neighbors had to then break down the door to rescue the children. They both sustained burns but none of them were life threatening. In court this evening, no plea was taken from her as the court prosecutor was not certain yet if the matter will be dealt with on indictment or summarily at this time. Magistrate Hamilton offered her bail of $1000 since the court prosecutor had no objection. But she was unable to meet bail by 4:30 Friday evening and was taken to jail until October 8. The two children are currently in the care of the Social Service Department.
