Multicultural festivity this weekend in Belmopan

The Cultural Regional Institute of Belize (CRIB) has been busy promoting cultural events locally.  The organization is a group of persons who through the promotion of cultural events and exposure to the different cultures of Belize believes that they can contribute to the sustainable development of the country.  Directors for the organization Manuel Lizarraga and  Christian Gutierrez visited our office to speak about an upcoming event.

Manuel Lizarraga – CRIB Director:
vlcsnap-2013-05-20-19h22m36s119This event is referred to as a multicultural festivity.  I want to say that, last year we had various multicultural activities, small open door events at the Belmopan Market.  But this year we’ll have a closed door event at UB Gymnasium, May 27th. It’s projecting to be a very good positive family event.  It will be basically a whole day event, beginning at 10 a.m., and going all the way to 7 p.m.  [There will] be a wide variety of entertainment and food.  Once you buy a ticket, you’ll be buying a packaged deal, entertainment and cultural food.  so you’ll have a choice of different cultural food, and you’ll have a wide variety of cultural performances.

The event will be held at the University of Belize Gymnasium and will commence at 10am. Mr Lizarraga told us about the different groups which will be performing at the cultural fair.

Manuel Lizarraga – CRIB Director:
vlcsnap-2013-05-20-19h16m36s86On the intangible cultural heritage part you have a lot of cultural dances, Mestizo Mayan dances, Garifuna drums.  We have groups Indian groups from Corozal.  We also have a Mariachi from Ranchito, a group from San Jose – Panama, Orange walk District, from Hopkins, and many from the Cayo District, and Belmopan.  We will have a wide variety of colourful cultural performance.

Tickets are on sale for 15, 25 and 45 dollars per person which is inclusive of food. Lizarraga says that tickets purchased will directly benefit the artisans.

Manuel Lizarraga – CRIB Director:
vlcsnap-2013-05-20-19h21m46s130All the proceeds of selling of our tickets will go towards paying for these artisans.  We pay these artisans to perform, whether they sing or they dance, or they pay music.  We pay them for their performance, as well as we cover their expenses and we feed them. All your contributions, spending on tickets to come to this event, or whatever the contribution might be otherwise, will actually go towards supporting these people, paying their expenses. I appeal again to all Belmopanese, and to all Belizeans, to please value culture.

Persons interested in participating or buying tickets for the event can contact C.R.I.B. at  621-2703 or 600-4312.
