The competition to find Belize’s best songwriters and singers is in its first stages of elimination. At Fort Cairns Plaza in Orange Walk Town on Thursday night, winners in the Belize and Carnival Song Competitions were selected for the Northern Region. With more here is Creative Arts Development Officer at the Institute of Creative Arts, Joseph Stamp-Romero.
“We have two competitors so far for the Belize Song. So far we haven’t had a Carnival competitor. In terms of a point system, only two persons qualified for the Belize Song.”
Six competitors took part from the Corozal and Orange Walk Districts, one each in the junior categories and four in the senior division. Mr Stamp-Romero previews Friday night’s eliminations at the Cayo Welcome Center in San Ignacio, and Saturday’s for the Central Region at BTL Park in Belize City.
“In Cayo, we expect to have at least nine [competitors], based on what we’ve seen so far, and some are coming from Cayo South, Santa Elena, some from Belmopan. We’re covering Santa Elena, San Ignacio, Belmopan, and neighbouring areas. We’re looking at nine so far, and by midday I should know exactly what the number is like for Cayo. For Belize City, we’re really beyond ten right now. We closed that already. People still are saying, ‘Can we come in?’ Of course, that is at the discretion of ICA. However we have already close off our entry pool, but songs keep on coming in. We’re way beyond ten, right now, in Belize.”
Entrance is free. The southern eliminations will take place on Sunday, July 21 at Why-Not Island in Dangriga Town, and the National Finals are set for the Memorial Park in Belize City on August 9.
