New Cane field on Western Highway

As the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association reels at the current state of affairs, there are movements afoot from other companies unbeknownst to the association. Very reliable information reaching Plus News points to the existence of a cane field located at mile 25 on the Western highway.

Sources say that the farm, owned by a company named the “Belize River Farm” has cultivated several millions of dollars worth of sugarcane that is waiting to be harvested. But before they are authorized to take their crop to the Tower Hill mill they must first get approval from several entities required by law. That include: BSI/ASR; SICB; and of course the BSCFA.

It is in this respect that we asked Alfredo Ortega, in light of being the former Chairman of the BSCFA and a current director of the BSCFA and a present member of the Sugar Cane Production Committee if he knows anything about this sugarcane company.

Emanuel Pech – Plus News

“There is credible information that this company has produced a large amount of cane crop ready to be harvested.  Does BSCFA know anything about them.”

“The only company I know is the Green Farm land that has some cane planted here by Camaleta, and they have planted there an amount of cane which they deliver. Last year [it was] two thousand tons.  They have another plantation from Belize going to Belmopan.  Big Falls, I think they named that place.

Apart from them I don’t know about any other company by that name that you called.”

“The BSCFA knows nothing of this company?”

.

Alfredo Ortega – BSCFA Committee of Management

“I don’t know if the Chairman has any knowledge about it,  but personally I don’t have any knowledge about that, and I am a member of the Committee.”

.

It is entities like these that could see a possible benefit from BSCFA’s almost inevitable demise. Sources say that this cane field, which seems to be preparing for a big harvest, is situated on an old rice farm which belonged a group by the name of Harvest Falls.

Also note worthy is that the Government of Belize owns a total of three million, eight hundred and thirty three thousand, three hundred and thirty three (3,833,333) shares in BSI which averages out to about 1.8% of the company.
