Belize’s new Ambassador from the Republic of China (Taiwan) landed at the Philip Goldson International Airport Thursday morning. His Excellency Benjamin Ho says it is a sort of homecoming for him, having been in Belize more than two decades last. He speaks for the first time to reporters.
Benjamin Ho – New Taiwanese Ambassador
“My government decided to appoint me as Ambassador here. I was very excited. Without hesitation, I accepted immediately. I have so many friends, old friends. As I come here I will make more new friends. I think myself as a Belizean, so since I am here I would like to work together with your people hand in hand, so that we can work together and we can strengthen our policies in many respects, like infrastructure development, like in medical cooperation, like human resource training, education, all kinds, even in energy and the environment. These are issues of common concern that we can try to work together.”
Ambassador Ho says the almost immediate nature of his appointment on the departure of David Wu a week ago confirms Taiwan’s healthy relationship with Belize.
“Belize is one of our most supportive allies to Taiwan, Republic of China. we appreciate all the strong support in the past years from your Government, a voice for us. Our people and our Government are very appreciative for all the support from your Government and your people. We would like to be a good development partner with your country, so [when] we work together, we can strengthen and we can enhance the cooperation that is between both of us.
Since I’ve been here for four and a half years, I know [how] things are, and what the weak points are. So I am going to continue expend our strength. In the meantime, I’m going to strengthen our weak points, so that we can do a better job in the future. I cannot wait to begin to work, right away!”
Among the first item on Ambassador Ho’s agenda is a meeting with the local Taiwanese community, whom he encouraged to become more involved in Belizean development. Ambassador Ho was hosted by the Belize-Taiwan Chamber of Commerce at Embassy headquarters on North Park Street.
