While AIDS is a deadly disease, it is not Belize’s number one killer. In fact, it is not even on the top five list. According to the Ministry of Health, the top 5 killers in the country of Belize are heart disease, cancer, diabetes, unintentional injuries such as traffic accidents and manslaughter, and number 5 is homicides. Those were the top 5 causes of death in the country from 2008 to 2012. HIV and aids rounded out at number 6.
According to the Ministry of Health data, the top three killers claimed the lives of 1000 Belizeans due to heart disease, over 800 due to cancer, and nearly 700 due to diabetes, during those five years. Unintentional injuries claimed the lives of 544 persons while almost 500 persons were murdered . The official data indicate that a total of 7,410 Belizeans died between 2008 and 2012 at an average of 1,500 persons per year. And while the 2013 data has not been finalized as yet, reports are that those 2013 data are showing the same trend.
