Mario Cardona was driving during the night towards Belmopan with an empty oil tanker as he was returning from making delivery for Belize Natural Energy to Big Creek in Independence.

Some 400 to 500 yards away from the Sibun Bridge, the truck ran off the road down some 10 feet into an orchard. Fortunately, he was unharmed and the vehicle didn’t sustain any major damage.

The tanker was in tact and there was only minor damage to the actual truck.  When we arrived on location this morning, a tractor had just pulled the truck back on to the highway and the driver and other men were doing repairs to the left front wheel . We were unable to determine whether it was human error or mechanical error that caused the accident.

While the truck was carrying fuel for Belize Natural Energy, those trucks are privately owned and contracted by the company. However, when we were on the scene, a BNE representative was on the scene overseeing the process.
