Omar Figueroa beats Richard Harrison 2:1

60.81% of Cayo North’s registered voters cast their votes in Monday’s by election in Cayo North; a fair turn out.   The results of that election were announced at around 9 o’clock, so when we left you at the end of our newscast the counting was still on the way.

It was a busy day on Monday  for the two camps to get their voters in at the polls, to vote for either UDP candidate Omar Figueroa or PUP candidate Richard Harrison.

At the end of it all, Omar Figueroa garnered an impressive lead, almost doubling Harrison’s votes.

It’s about Cayo North.  It’s always been about the people of Cayo North.

But let me just thank the Prime Minister for his support and his encouragement, the deputy prime minister, all my team in Cayo North.  I couldn‘t have done it [without you], my wife, my family, my friends.  I am just so grateful to so many people.

The voters came out, and they spoke loud and clear, but you look at the history of those elections in Bullet Tree, and our margin was very, very impressive in Bullet Tree Falls.  I mean look at what the past General Elections have been like in Bullet Tree, and you will know that the margin of victory in Bullet Tree was very, very significant.

“Looking at the negative side, the PUP is saying that ‘Well we just put Harrison out there, but really want Michel Chebat to run,’ and that will be a serious contest in the next general.”

.

Omar Figueroa
“There is no negative side to this. Listen to the people out there. They could send whoever they want. This is about the people of Cayo North. Send whoever they want.

That’s what I aspired for, to represent the people of Cayo North, and that’s my focus, representing the people of Cayo North.

“You are a very specialize and educated person. Will you become a minister? Is that foreseeable?”

.

Omar Figueroa, Cayo North
“I am the representative for the people of Cayo North. That’s it. I am the Area Representative for the people of Cayo North.”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow, while happy about the victory, said that the UDP cannot afford to be boastful or complacent after the impressive win.

.

vlcsnap-2015-01-07-05h29m16s141Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“I was cautious, but we always figured that it would be a huge margin of victory.  Clearly this is a great momentum builder, but we cannot rest on our laurels.  We cannot become complacent, and we cannot appear to be boastful.  One election at a time.  We must savor the victory, but we must tomorrow begin to work towards winning again, and as handsomely, in the Municipal Elections.

This is a huge, huge margin of victory and it has to be extremely encouraging for us.  We have to be ecstatic about it, both because of what it says about the UDP, but also because of what it says about the PUP.   Remember, there are two parties involved, as there will be in the Municipal Elections, as there will be in the General Elections.

It is clear, we had a wonderful candidate, all kudos to him, all praises to him, but it is clear as well that people are happy with the performance of the Government, and it is equally clear that they’re not happy with the performance of the opposition.

We brought out our people.  Clearly it was a two-horse race. The other horse appeared not to be running.  The PUP could not bring out its supporters for various reasons, including tremendous disenchantment with their leadership as expressed by the departed area representative.

So if two persons, two parties are in the race, [and] one party brings out its supporters [and] the other doesn’t, you can’t expect a huge turnout of the order of seventy percent or more.”

.

The Prime Minister said that they will be focusing their efforts and energies in the next few weeks and months on the sugar industry and municipal elections.

.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

Our concentration really, our focus has to be on dealing with some of the immediate issues, for example, the sugar industry crisis,  and concentrating on the March Municipal Elections.  I don’t want to do anything to rock any boat.  I want this party to be united going into March, and quite honestly while nothing is cast in concrete I do not foresee making any changes at this time.

With respect to our preliminary conversations, Doctor Figueroa wants to concentrate solely on the Cayo North constituency. [He] wants to start working from now for the General Elections in Cayo North.”
