Opposition Leader says Foreign Affairs Minister has done a grave disservice to the nation

Foreign Affairs Minister Wilfred Elrington has been consistently under the microscope in recent months for several statements that some vocal Belizeans have found offensive and inappropriate with regard to the Guatemalan dispute. The Minister has been hardly apologetic for his stance but PUP leader Francis Fonseca says that even though Elrington is a friend and mentor, he’s got it all wrong:
Francis Fonseca – Leader of the Opposition:
vlcsnap-2013-03-26-19h18m32s122With the greatest of respect to him in his capacity of the Foreign Minister of this country, I believe he has done a grave disservice to the nation of Belize and to the people of Belize. He has made a lot of offhanded comments that I believe have not served Belize’s national interest. And I think the overall handing of this entire matter by the Government of Belize and by his ministry in particular, leaves a lot to be desired. And it is no surprise for me therefore that wherever I go, Belizeans have very little confidence in the Foreign Minister of Belize. We saw it reflected last week in the Amandala Newspaper; in effect calling for his removal. I think he has been out of touch with the Belizean people on this matter for a very long time and that has not serve Belize’s interest well.

Fonseca also says the party may pull its representative, former Foreign Affairs Minister and senior attorney Lisa Shoman, from the team if the current impasse is not satisfactorily resolved:

Francis Fonseca – Leader of the Opposition:
Regretably the Hon Foreign Minister, Wilfred Elrington, has lost in our view the trust and confidence of the Belizean people.  When that happens, we believe it is time for the Prime Minister to act.  And we will continue to make that clear.
