This year’s Independence Day Carnival in Orange Walk saw a huge turnout as hundreds of people from across the country gathered at the center of town to bear witness to the annual event, which, regrettably ended in tragedy.
The festive mood of the Carnival was cut short when sometime around 6 on Sunday evening one of the parade floats participating in the event crushed a man under its wheels as it was rounding the last stretch of the parade route.
The accident occurred on Dunn Street a few yards away from the Orange Walk Cemetery.
The name of the victim is Santos Uh of Orange Walk Town.
Reports from Orange Walk say that Santos was trying to grab a beer that was being handed to him from the float. Eyewitnesses report seeing Santos Uh jump to grab the item, and that is when he slipped and fell right in the path of the truck’s wheels, which crushed him from head to toe.
Orange Walk Police detained the driver of the truck, but later released him.
